Product Overview

Single Core 6.35/11kV (Um=12kV) Medium Voltage Unarmoured Cable is an XLPE-insulated, copper tape screened power cable for MV distribution at the UK/Commonwealth standard voltage level. 6.35/11kV — universally referred to simply as "11kV" in the industry — is the backbone voltage of urban and suburban electricity distribution in the UK, Ireland, South Africa, India, Malaysia, Singapore, and dozens of Commonwealth and former British-influenced nations. With only 3.4mm of XLPE insulation, it is the most cost-efficient MV cable offering the lowest cable diameter and weight for a given cross-section, making it the preferred choice for congested urban cable ducts where space is at a premium.

6.35/11kV: The UK/Commonwealth Urban Distribution Voltage

11kV is the voltage that powers most of the world's Commonwealth cities. From London's underground cable network to Mumbai's distribution ring mains, 11kV is the default MV distribution voltage wherever British electrical engineering standards established the infrastructure. It typically feeds from 33/11kV primary substations to 11kV/415V distribution transformers located within a few hundred metres of end consumers. Because the insulation is only 3.4mm thick versus 4.5mm for 15kV and 8.0mm for 33kV, 11kV cables are significantly more compact — a critical advantage in the congested cable ducts of century-old urban infrastructure where duct space was allocated when cable technology required much thicker paper-insulated construction.

Applicable Standards

StandardScope
BS 6622British standard: XLPE insulated single-core cables for rated voltages 3.8/6.6kV to 19/33kV. The primary UK specification covering 11kV cables.
IEC 60502-2International standard for extruded insulation power cables 6kV to 30kV. 6.35/11kV is covered under this standard.
IEC 60840PD testing methodology. Factory testing to <5 pC at 11kV (1.73U₀) on every production length.
BS 7835LSZH sheathed MV cables for public buildings, tunnels, and underground stations.
IEC 60228Conductor specification — Class 2 stranded copper and aluminium.
11kV is the testing voltage class with the longest operational history. The UK utility network has been operating 11kV XLPE cables since the 1970s. This multi-decade track record provides confidence in the long-term reliability of 3.4mm XLPE insulation when manufactured under proper quality control — provided routine PD testing at factory acceptance is maintained as a non-negotiable quality gate.

Typical Applications — 6.35/11kV Voltage Class

🇬🇧

UK & Commonwealth Urban Distribution

Primary application. London, Dublin, Johannesburg, Mumbai, Kuala Lumpur — all use 11kV as the urban MV distribution backbone fed from 33/11kV substations.

🏙️

Underground Ring Mains

11kV ring main units (RMUs) in underground substations serving 500-1000 consumers per transformer. Most compact MV cable for congested urban ducts.

🏭

Industrial Parks & Estates

Dedicated 11kV feeders to industrial estates from utility substations. XLPE insulation handles load cycling from shift-based industrial operations.

🏢

Commercial Building Feeders

Hotel complexes, shopping centers, and office towers served via dedicated 11kV/415V packaged substations within the building footprint.

Switchgear Interconnections

11kV cables between SF₆/vacuum switchgear panels in factory-built substations. Unarmoured construction suitable for protected indoor cable trenches.

🌍
