Product Overview

Three Core 18/30kV (Um=36kV) Medium Voltage Unarmoured Cable is a sub-transmission-class three-core XLPE-insulated power cable. At 18/30kV with 8.0mm insulation per core, this cable sits at the interface between medium voltage and high voltage — carrying the highest power density of any three-core unarmoured cable in the IEC 60502-2 framework. It connects 132/30kV or 110/30kV primary substations to downstream 30/10kV or 30/0.4kV secondary substation transformers, and serves as the backbone inter-substation cable in 30kV-class utility networks. The three individually screened cores are assembled with non-hygroscopic filler and binder tape, enclosed in a PVC Type ST2 outer sheath. At 90.0-101.8mm overall diameter, this is the largest three-core unarmoured cable in the standard product range — handled exclusively with mechanical pulling equipment and heavy-duty cable drums.

18/30kV: Where Three-Core MV Peaks

18/30kV (Um=36kV) is the maximum rated voltage for three-core unarmoured cable under IEC 60502-2. Beyond this voltage, the physical dimensions and bending radius of a three-core assembly become impractical for standard cable drums and installation equipment — which is why 26/35kV and above are typically supplied as single-core cables only. The 18/30kV three-core cable is the "maximum density" option: it delivers the highest possible power per cable pull in the MV product range. For a single 3×400mm² copper circuit, the continuous current rating in soil is 590A at 30kV — equivalent to approximately 30MW of apparent power transfer in a single cable assembly.

Applicable Standards

StandardScope
IEC 60502-2International standard for extruded cables 6kV-30kV. 18/30kV is the highest voltage covered under this standard.
GB/T 12706.2Chinese national standard for power cables 6kV to 35kV. Governs 18/30kV three-core cable for Chinese projects.
BS 6622British standard for XLPE insulated cables 3.8/6.6kV to 19/33kV. 18/30kV three-core covered under Part 1.
IEC 60840PD testing methodology for cables up to 150kV. Factory PD test at 31.1kV per core — the highest test voltage in the MV range.
BS 7835LSZH sheathed MV cables. Important for 18/30kV cables in indoor substations where fire safety is critical at this power level.
IEC 60228Conductors — Class 2 stranded copper and aluminium, compacted circular.
Handling note: Three-core 18/30kV cables are extremely heavy and stiff. A single drum of 3×400mm² cable can weigh over 17 tonnes. Installation requires mechanical winching, cable rollers at 1.5m intervals, and cable socks rated for the pulling tension. The 15×OD minimum bend radius means a cable of 101.8mm OD requires a minimum bend radius of 1,527mm — a 3-metre diameter loop. Site installation planning must account for this at the design stage.
