Product Overview
Single Core 8.7/15kV (Um=17.5kV) MV Aluminium Wire Armoured Cable is the mid-range AWA armoured single-core cable serving the globally dominant 15kV distribution class. At 4.5mm XLPE insulation — constant across all cross-sections unlike the graduated 3.8/6.6kV class — this cable provides the mechanical protection of round aluminium wire armour for direct burial, underground duct, and outdoor installations at the most widely deployed MV voltage worldwide. The 15kV class is the standard utility distribution voltage in the US, Australia, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East — and in all of these markets, buried or exposed MV cables require armour per utility construction standards. For underground residential distribution (URD), mine site power networks, and 15kV industrial feeders where the cable route includes buried or exposed sections, the AWA variant is the mandatory specification.
Cable Construction

1. Stranded Aluminum Conductor
2. Semi-conductor Screen
3. XLPE Insulation — 4.5mm, 90°C
4. Copper Wire, Tape Screen
5. Inner PVC Sheath
6. Aluminum Wire Armor
7. Overall Sheath — PVC/MDPE/LSZH
Conductor
Copper stranded Class 2 or aluminium solid/stranded Class 2. Compacted circular per IEC 60228.
Screen + XLPE
Semi-conducting XLPE screen + 4.5mm XLPE insulation (constant). Triple-extruded, PD-free at 1.73U₀.
Copper Screen
Combined copper wires + tape. Carries earth fault current. Cross-section (4.4-10mm²) per system fault level.
Inner PVC Sheath
Extruded PVC separation layer. Prevents galvanic corrosion between copper screen and aluminium armour in buried installations.
Aluminium Wire Armour
Round Al wires 1.6-2.5mm. Non-magnetic — mandatory for single-core. Crush and impact rated per IEC 60502-2.
Overall Sheath
PVC Type ST2, MDPE, or LSZH (BS 7835). UV-stabilised for outdoor exposure. Black.

Packaging & Delivery
Export Wooden Drum
Fumigated wooden drums. AWA armoured cables are heavier than unarmoured but lighter than steel wire equivalents.
Moisture Protection
Triple-layer heat-shrink end caps with desiccant. AWA cables require sealed ends — water ingress to armour layer causes galvanic corrosion.
Documentation
PD test certificate, AC voltage test report, armour continuity test, material traceability per BS 6622.
Typical Applications — Single Core 8.7/15kV AWA
Global 15kV Direct Burial
Underground residential and commercial distribution at 15kV class where direct burial mandates armoured cable per utility standards.
Mining MV Networks
Open-pit and underground mining 15kV feeders. AWA withstands mechanical abuse from mobile equipment, rockfall, and blasting vibration.
Industrial Feeder Cables
Factory and processing plant 15kV feeders routed through cable trays and underground ducts where mechanical protection is required.
Substation Interconnections
15kV AWA cables between switchgear and transformers in outdoor substations. Armour protects against weather, wildlife, and maintenance activity.
Water & Wet Soil Installation
Suitable for laying in fresh water and permanently wet soil. MDPE sheath + AWA combination for maximum moisture protection.
Cable Ducts & Trenches
Underground duct banks subject to construction traffic. AWA provides crush resistance that unarmoured cables lack.
