Product Overview

Thermoplastic Fixture (TF) Wire is a 600V single-conductor (and two-conductor) copper building wire with PVC thermoplastic insulation, manufactured to UL 66 (Fixture Wire), UL 83 (Thermoplastic-Insulated Wires and Cables), and UL 1581 (Reference Standard for Electrical Wires, Cables, and Flexible Cords). CSA C22.2 compliant for Canadian installations. TF wire is UL Listed for use in luminaires, signs, pendant fixtures, and internal wiring of electrical equipment where the conductor is protected within an enclosure or raceway. The PVC jacket is flame-retardant, moisture-resistant, and resistant to oil and acids encountered in manufacturing environments. Available with solid or stranded copper conductors in single-conductor and two-conductor configurations, with standard colors black and white (custom colors on request). With a 90°C dry-location temperature rating and working voltages up to 600V, TF wire is the standard North American fixture and machine-tool wiring solution for OEMs, lighting manufacturers, and appliance builders. Operating temperature is -40°C to +90°C with a minimum installation temperature of -25°C.

TF wire fills a specific niche in the North American electrical market: small-gauge (18-16 AWG, 0.75-1.25mm²) building wire designed for protected internal wiring applications. Unlike power distribution cables (e.g. URD, THHN) which carry current over long distances, TF wire is the final link inside the product — the wire that connects the ballast to the lamp socket, the switch to the motor, the transformer to the control board. Its PVC insulation provides the flame retardancy required inside enclosed luminaires without the bulk or cost of XLPE cross-linked polyethylene. The solid conductor variant offers easier termination in push-in connectors common in fluorescent fixture manufacturing; the stranded variant provides flexibility for routing through cramped appliance chassis. With a bending radius of 4× the overall diameter (3.2 mm minimum), TF wire can be dressed through the tightest internal pathways without kinking or insulation damage.

For equipment manufacturers specifying wire for their UL Listed end products, TF wire's UL 66 and CSA C22.2 dual certifications mean one part number covers both US and Canadian compliance. The PVC compound is specifically formulated to withstand the elevated temperatures inside luminaire housings without degradation, embrittlement, or outgassing — a critical requirement in enclosed fixture applications where wire replacement is impractical after assembly.

Small-gauge fixture wire: TF wire is specifically designed for AWG 18-16 (0.75-1.25mm²) — the smallest standard conductor sizes in the North American building wire family. These gauges are used exclusively for internal wiring of luminaires, signs, and appliances where current draws are low (typically under 10A) and space is at a premium. The minimum bending radius of 4×D (as low as 3.2mm for the 0.75mm² stranded variant) makes TF wire uniquely suited for routing through the tight internal architecture of modern LED fixtures and compact appliance chassis.
