Product Overview
Copper Conductor Triplex Service Drop Cable 600V is a neutral-supported overhead service drop cable consisting of two phase conductors and one bare neutral messenger, assembled in a twisted ("triplex") configuration. Phase conductors: concentrically stranded compressed soft copper, insulated with polyethylene (PE, 75°C) or cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE, 90°C). Neutral messenger: bare hard-drawn copper, solid or stranded, serving as both the return-current path and the structural member supporting the cable's span between the utility pole and the building attachment point. Triplex is the standard residential service drop for 120/240V single-phase three-wire systems — two 120V phase conductors plus a grounded neutral provide both 120V and 240V at the service entrance.
Duplex vs Triplex Service Drop
| Duplex | Triplex | |
|---|---|---|
| Conductors | 1 phase + 1 neutral | 2 phases + 1 neutral |
| System | 120V two-wire | 120/240V three-wire (standard residential) |
| Typical Use | Small loads, lighting, outbuildings | Standard residential service, whole-house supply |
Phase Conductors (×2)
Concentrically stranded compressed soft copper, ASTM B-8. PE (75°C) or XLPE (90°C) insulation. 45 or 60 mils.
Neutral Messenger
Bare hard-drawn copper, solid or 7-strand, ASTM B-1. Supports full mechanical tension of the service span.
Triplex Assembly
Two insulated phases twisted around the bare neutral messenger. Single-cable pull for complete residential service.
Applicable Standards
| Standard | Scope |
|---|---|
| ASTM B-1 | Hard-drawn copper wire. Governs the bare neutral messenger. |
| ASTM B-3 | Soft/annealed copper wire for phase conductor flexibility. |
| ASTM B-8 | Concentric-lay-stranded copper conductors. |
| ANSI/ICEA S-76-474 | Primary standard for neutral-supported power cable assemblies rated 600V. |
