Product Overview
Covered Line Wire ACSR Aluminum Conductor is a 600V overhead distribution conductor with a galvanized steel core surrounded by aluminum strands, encased in a weather-resistant LDPE, HDPE, or XLPE covering. ACSR (Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced) combines the high conductivity of 1350-H19 aluminium with the exceptional tensile strength of galvanized steel — the steel core carries the mechanical load while the aluminium outer strands carry the current. The strand notation (e.g., 6/1 = 6 aluminium + 1 steel) defines the ratio: a single central steel wire for small sizes, 7 steel wires for larger diameters, surrounded by concentric layers of aluminium. This construction gives ACSR the highest strength-to-conductivity ratio of any standard overhead conductor — capable of spanning distances that pure aluminium or 6201 alloy cannot without excessive sag.
Covered Line Wire Types — Alloy Choice Guide
| Type | Strength Mechanism | Conductivity | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| AAC (1350-H19) | Pure aluminium, strain-hardened only | 61% IACS — highest | Short spans, high ampacity priority, urban distribution |
| 6201-T81 Alloy | Al-Mg-Si precipitation hardening | 52.5% IACS — moderate | Medium-long spans, ice/wind zones |
| ACSR | Galvanized steel core + Al strands | ~55% IACS* — moderate | Longest spans, maximum strength, river crossings |
*Effective conductivity of ACSR varies by steel core ratio. 6/1 stranding: Al area ≈86% of total, effective conductivity ≈52.5% IACS.
Steel Core
Galvanized steel wire(s), Class A coating. 1 wire for small sizes, 7 wires for large. ASTM B-498. Carries ALL mechanical tension.
Aluminum Strands
1350-H19 aluminium, concentrically stranded around the steel core. Carries ALL electrical current. ASTM B-230/B-231.
PE/XLPE Covering
Weather-resistant LDPE, HDPE, or XLPE. Carbon black for UV stabilisation. ASTM C-8.35. Not full dielectric insulation.

Packaging & Delivery
Export Wooden Reel
Plywood or wooden reels. ACSR is heavier than AAC — reel capacity calculated on steel core weight. Standard reel sizes per utility practice.
Coil Packaging
Small sizes (6-4 AWG) available in coils. Utility-standard packaging for line crew vehicles.
Documentation
ASTM B-230/B-231 mill certificates, steel core galvanization test (ASTM B-498), covering thickness per ASTM C-8.35.
Typical Applications — ACSR Covered Line Wire
Overhead Secondary Distribution
600V secondary circuits from pole-mounted transformers to service drops. Steel core handles longer spans between poles.
River & Valley Crossings
Long-span crossings where self-weight and wind loading demand maximum tensile strength. ACSR is the standard conductor for all long-span applications.
Tree Wire (XLPE Covering)
Forested distribution corridors. ACSR's mechanical strength prevents conductor breakage from falling branches.
Heavy Ice Loading Zones
High ice accumulation areas where conductor weight under ice load can exceed 5× bare weight. ACSR steel core prevents catastrophic sag.
Rural Distribution
Long-span rural distribution where pole spacing is maximised to reduce construction cost. ACSR enables pole spacings of 80-120m vs 50-60m for AAC.
Utility Line Upgrades
Replacing bare ACSR with covered ACSR on existing poles — same pole loading, same span lengths, added tree-contact protection without structural reinforcement.
