Product Overview

Three Core 26/35kV (Um=42kV) Medium Voltage Unarmoured Cable is the highest-rated three-core XLPE insulated power cable in the commercial MV/HV product range. At 10.5mm of insulation per core — the thickest of any three-core unarmoured cable — it is engineered for 35kV distribution systems where the neutral earthing method subjects healthy phases to elevated phase-to-ground voltage during earth faults. In resistance-earthed or unearthed (isolated) neutral systems, a single-phase earth fault causes the two healthy phases to rise to full phase-to-phase voltage (35kV). The 26kV U₀ rating provides the necessary 24% safety margin over the 21kV class to handle this condition without accelerated insulation ageing — a critical consideration in industrial MV networks and generator auxiliary systems where continuous operation during a single earth fault is required by operational policy.

21/35kV vs 26/35kV: U₀ Matters for System Earthing

Both 21/35kV and 26/35kV cables are rated for the same phase-to-phase voltage (35kV) — the difference is in the U₀ rating: phase-to-ground voltage. In a solidly-earthed system, a phase-to-ground fault pulls the faulted phase voltage to near zero while healthy phases remain at U₀. In a resistance-earthed or isolated system, healthy phases rise to phase-to-phase voltage (35kV) during the fault. 26/35kV cable has 10.5mm insulation versus 9.3mm for 21/35kV — a 13% thicker dielectric barrier. If your system uses resistance earthing, Petersen coil earthing, or operates unearthed, specify 26/35kV. For solidly-earthed 35kV utility networks, 21/35kV is sufficient.

Applicable Standards

StandardScope
IEC 60840Power cables with extruded insulation for rated voltages above 30kV up to 150kV. 26/35kV (Um=42kV) is governed by this standard.
GB/T 12706.2Chinese national standard for power cables 6kV to 35kV. 26/35kV is the highest voltage class in this standard.
BS 6622British standard for XLPE insulated cables. 26/35kV three-core covered under Part 1.
BS 7835LSZH sheathed MV/HV cables for fire-sensitive indoor installations.
IEC 60228Conductors — Class 2 stranded copper and aluminium, compacted circular.
26/35kV is specified where the system earthing arrangement demands higher U₀ rating. The key engineering question: is the 35kV system solidly earthed, or does it use a resistance/impedance earthing method? Solidly earthed → 21/35kV. Resistance earthed / unearthed / Petersen coil → 26/35kV. Incorrect U₀ selection in a resistance-earthed system leads to accelerated partial discharge activity during earth fault events, progressively degrading the XLPE insulation. For industrial and generator auxiliary systems where earth fault operation is a planned operating mode, 26/35kV is the mandatory specification.

Source data note: Reference page lists standard IEC 60502 (not IEC 60840). Per IEC technical committee guidelines, 26/35kV (Um=42kV) falls under IEC 60840. Conductor range begins at 50mm² — cross-sections below 50mm² are available on request but are not commonly specified for 26/35kV due to the disproportionately large cable OD relative to the conductor cross-section.
