Product Overview

RVFAV-K Cable is a 0.6/1kV single-core flexible power cable with XLPE insulation and aluminium tape armor. The name follows the Spanish/French designation system: R = flexible Class 5 conductor, V = XLPE insulation, FAV = aluminium tape armor (Facing Aluminum, V = PVC bedding), K = flexible for fixed installation. Unlike all previously described armored cables, RVFAV-K uses aluminium tape rather than steel — this is essential for single-core applications because a ferromagnetic steel armor would generate inductive eddy currents that cause dangerous overheating. The aluminium tape provides equivalent mechanical protection without the magnetic penalty. Additionally, the Class 5 finely stranded conductor gives RVFAV-K a minimum bending radius of only 5 × cable diameter, making it the most flexible armored cable in this product range.

Steel vs Aluminium Armour in Single-Core Cables

PropertySteel Tape Armour (N2XBY, NYBY...)Aluminium Tape Armour (RVFAV-K)
Magnetic PropertiesFerromagnetic — induces eddy currents in single-coreNon-magnetic — safe for single-core AC circuits
Conductor Temperature Rise from ArmourSignificant in single-core applicationsMinimal — no magnetic losses
WeightHeavier~30% lighter
Mechanical ProtectionExcellent — steel is harderGood — adequate for underground and conduit protection
Corrosion ResistanceRequires galvanizationInherently corrosion-resistant (aluminum oxide passivation)
Conductor FlexibilityClass 1 or 2 (solid/stranded)Class 5 (finely stranded, R ≤5×D bend)
Why this matters: In a 3-phase system, if each phase uses a separate single-core steel-armored cable, the rotating magnetic field induces currents in the steel tape that can raise the armor temperature by 30-50°C. This is why building codes mandate non-magnetic armor (aluminium) or non-magnetic wires for single-core AC installations. For multi-core cables, the opposing magnetic fields cancel out, so steel armor is safe.

Voltage Drop Characteristics

For the first time in this product series, voltage drop data (V/A·km) is provided directly in the specification table. Use this to calculate maximum circuit lengths: Max Length = (Permissible Voltage Drop × 1000) / (Vdrop × Current × cos φ). For precise project calculations, contact our engineering team.

Technical Specifications — Single Core Only

RVFAV-K is exclusively a single-core cable. For multi-core flexible armored applications, refer to RVFV-K. Current ratings: air 30°C, buried 20°C, 2.5 K·m/W. Voltage drop per IEC 60364-5-52 calculation method, 50Hz, cos φ = 0.8.

Voltage drop example: For a 1×185mm² RVFAV-K cable carrying 400A over 150m at cos φ = 0.8: Vdrop = 0.220 × 400 × 0.150 = 13.2V. In a 400V 3-phase system, this represents 3.3% voltage drop — within the 5% maximum recommended by IEC 60364-5-52.

Packaging & Delivery

Typical Applications

RVFAV-K is specified for single-core flexible installations where ease of installation, tight bend radii, and non-magnetic armor are critical:

Single-Core Power Distribution

Individual phase conductors in 3-phase systems. Aluminium armor eliminates eddy current heating that steel-armored single-core cables suffer from.

🏭

Industrial Connections

Flexible connections to motors, generators, and transformers. Class 5 stranding permits easy routing in tight equipment spaces.

🌐

Underground Networks

Direct burial in LV distribution networks. Aluminium tape protects against soil pressure and rodent damage.

💡

Outdoor Lighting

Underground feeders for street lighting, parking lot lighting, and outdoor area illumination. UV-stabilized sheath.

🏗️

Cable Ducts & Conduits

Tight conduit pulls where 5×D bend radius allows installation in confined underground duct networks.

❄️

Cold Climate Installations

Rated to -40°C for fixed installations. Flexible PVC sheath remains pliable at sub-zero temperatures.
