Product Overview
NA2XRY Cable is a 0.6/1kV XLPE-insulated steel wire armoured PVC-sheathed power cable with aluminium conductor, manufactured to BS 5467, BS 6346, and IEC 60502-1. VDE naming: N = standard type, A = aluminium conductor, 2X = XLPE insulation, R = round steel wires (Runddrahtbewehrung), Y = PVC sheath. NA2XRY is the aluminium-conductor counterpart of the widely specified N2XRY (copper) — sharing identical insulation, armour, and sheath construction. The aluminum conductor reduces cable weight by approximately 50% and material cost by 40-60% versus the equivalent copper cable. For the same ampacity, aluminum requires approximately one AWG/wire-size larger cross-section due to its 61% IACS conductivity. The steel wire armour consists of individual galvanized wires helically wound, providing superior tensile strength and flexibility versus steel tape armour — making NA2XRY ideal for duct pulling, vertical risers, and installations subject to longitudinal mechanical stress.
NA2XRY (Al) vs N2XRY (Cu): Same Cable, Different Economics
| Property | NA2XRY (Aluminium) | N2XRY (Copper) |
|---|---|---|
| Insulation | XLPE, 90°C — identical | XLPE, 90°C — identical |
| Armour | Steel wire (SWA) — identical | Steel wire (SWA) — identical |
| Sheath | PVC — identical | PVC — identical |
| Conductor Weight | ~50% lighter | Reference |
| Conductor Cost | ~40-60% lower | Higher |
| Conductivity (IACS) | ~61% | 100% |
| Ampacity (same cross-section) | Lower — ~20-25% lower than Cu equivalent | Reference |
| Termination | Requires Al-Cu bi-metallic lugs | Standard copper lugs |
Cable Construction
Aluminum Conductor
Hard drawn aluminum, stranded circular or shaped. Class 1 or 2 to EN 60228. Half the weight of copper.
XLPE Insulation
Cross-linked polyethylene, 90°C continuous, 250°C short-circuit. Higher ampacity per cross-section than PVC.
PVC Bedding
Extruded PVC inner sheath. Separates insulated cores from wire armour. Protects insulation from wire abrasion.
Steel Wire Armour (SWA)
Single layer of galvanized steel wires, helically wound. 0.8-3.15mm wire diameter per cross-section. High tensile strength.
PVC Outer Sheath
Extruded PVC, black (standard). Good chemical and oil resistance. Halogen content <15%.
Cost-Optimized Power
Aluminum XLPE SWA delivers XLPE performance at PVC cable cost. Ideal for cost-driven infrastructure projects.

Packaging & Delivery
Heavy-Duty Wooden Drum
Iron-reinforced drums for SWA cables. Aluminum conductor reduces weight vs copper — smaller drums possible for same cross-section.
Export Wooden Drum
Fumigated solid wood. BS 5467 compliant drum marking. Steel-reinforced flanges for 95mm²+.
Custom Packaging
BS-compliant labeling, sequential meter marking. Customer-specified drum types on request.
Typical Applications
Power Distribution Networks
AC 50Hz power and distribution lines. Aluminum XLPE SWA delivers XLPE performance at a cost point competitive with PVC cables.
Industrial Power Applications
Fixed industrial installations. Steel wire armour provides high mechanical protection for factory environments.
Underground Tunnels
SWA prevents mechanical damage during installation and service life in tunnels and underground passages.
Duct Pulling & Vertical Risers
Wire armour's tensile strength enables long-distance duct pulling. Supports cable weight in vertical installations.
Cost-Driven Infrastructure
Aluminum conductor reduces project material cost by 40-60% vs copper. XLPE insulation maximizes ampacity for a given aluminum cross-section.
Cold Climate
-40°C minimum service temperature. XLPE remains pliable at low temperatures unlike PVC insulation.
