Product Overview
Single Core AWA Cable is a 0.6/1kV XLPE-insulated aluminium wire armoured power cable manufactured to BS 5467 and IEC 60502-1. AWA = Aluminium Wire Armour: individual aluminium wires helically wound over an extruded PVC bedding layer. Unlike tape armour which provides a continuous cylindrical barrier, wire armour offers greater flexibility and higher tensile strength — making AWA the preferred choice for installations where the cable must be pulled through ducts, withstand longitudinal stress, or navigate complex routing. The aluminium wire is non-magnetic, avoiding the eddy current heating issue that prevents steel armour from being used on single-core AC circuits. AWA is available with copper or aluminium conductors and with PVC or LSZH outer sheath.
Tape vs Wire Armour Comparison
| Property | Steel Tape Armour (STA — N2XBY, YJV22) | Aluminium Wire Armour (AWA) |
|---|---|---|
| Armour Type | Double steel tape, helical wrap | Individual aluminium wires, helically laid |
| Mechanical Protection | Crush and impact resistance — best for direct burial | Tensile strength and flexibility — best for pulling/routing |
| Bend Radius | 12-15 × D | ~10-12 × D (more flexible with wires) |
| Tensile Strength | Moderate | High — each wire shares longitudinal load |
| Single-Core Safety | Steel is magnetic — eddy current heating | Aluminium is non-magnetic — safe for single-core AC |
| Sheath Options | PVC standard; HDPE, LSZH available | PVC or LSZH standard |
Cable Construction

1. Conductor — Cu or Al, CC compacted circular
2. XLPE Insulation — 90°C rated
3. Inner Sheath — PVC bedding
4. Al Wire Armour — Helically wound individual wires
5. Bedding Tape — Binding layer over armour
6. Outer Sheath — PVC ST2 or LSZH
Copper or Al Conductor
Compacted circular stranded (CC) or solid (RE). Cu for high conductivity; Al for 50% weight saving at ~40-60% lower material cost.
XLPE Insulation
Cross-linked polyethylene per IEC 60502-1. 90°C continuous, 250°C short-circuit. Color: red, black, or per customer spec.
PVC Bedding
Extruded PVC layer applied over the insulated core before armouring. Protects insulation from wire abrasion during pulling.
Aluminium Wire Armour
Individual aluminium wires (1.25-2.5mm dia.) helically wound. Non-magnetic for single-core. High tensile strength for duct pulling.
PVC or LSZH Sheath
PVC Type ST2 (IEC 60502-1) or LSZH (BS 7211/6724). Fire retardant, anti-termite, anti-rodent, and oil-resistant variants on request.
Wire Armour Advantage
Greater flexibility than tape-armoured cables. Superior longitudinal strength for pulling through underground ducts and conduits.
