Aluminum THHN THWN-2 Wire 600V is a stranded aluminium conductor building wire with PVC+Nylon insulation manufactured to UL-83 — the aluminium counterpart to the copper THHN/THWN wire that has dominated North American conduit and raceway installations for decades. The THWN-2 designation (aluminium-specific rating) provides 90°C operation in both wet and dry locations — superseding the standard THWN 75°C wet rating that applies to copper THHN/THWN — giving aluminium THWN-2 the same 90°C ampacity regardless of installation environment. For equivalent current-carrying capacity, aluminium THWN-2 is approximately half the weight of copper THHN (2.70 vs 8.89 g/cm³) and roughly one-third the conductor material cost, making it the dominant choice for feeder circuits, service entrance conductors, and large distribution wiring where the larger cross-section required for the same ampacity is acceptable within the allocated conduit space.
The three-layer construction mirrors the copper THHN build: (1) a compacted stranded aluminium alloy conductor per UL-83 aluminium conductor requirements — compacted stranding with count codes 7, 19, 37, 61 ranging up to 84-strand and 96-strand compact configurations for the largest sizes, which reduce the conductor diameter versus standard concentric-lay stranded aluminium for the same cross-section, (2) a colour-coded PVC insulation layer providing the primary dielectric strength with insulation thickness matching copper THHN of equivalent AWG (0.76mm for AWG 8-2, 1.02mm for AWG 1-4/0, 1.27mm for 250-500 MCM), and (3) an extruded Nylon (polyamide) outer jacket providing mechanical toughness. The range covers 12 sizes from AWG 1/0 (≈50mm²) to 800 MCM (≈400mm²) — aluminium THWN-2 is manufactured only in sizes where the weight advantage materially benefits the installer: below AWG 1/0, the weight saving is negligible and copper's superior termination convenience dominates.
