Product Overview

H05Z-K / H07Z-K Halogen Free Flame Retardant Cables are single-core Class 5 flexible copper conductor cables with cross-link polyolefin EI5 LSOH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) insulation manufactured to HD 22.9 S2, VDE-0282 Part-9, and BS 7211. The harmonised designation decodes: H = CENELEC harmonised, 05 = 300/500V or 07 = 450/750V, Z = halogen-free cross-link polyolefin, -K = flexible Class 5 conductor. Unlike PVC cables which emit dense, toxic hydrogen chloride gas (HCl) when burning, H05Z-K/H07Z-K cables produce no corrosive gases — a critical safety distinction for public and government buildings, hospitals, airports, and any installation where electronic equipment would be destroyed by the acidic byproducts of PVC combustion. The thermosetting polyolefin EI5 insulation per BS EN 50363-5 is cross-linked — meaning the molecular structure is bonded in a three-dimensional network — delivering superior thermal stability (90°C continuous, -40°C static) and mechanical toughness at the expense of flexibility (8×D bending radius vs PVC's 4×D).

When a PVC cable burns in a server room, the HCl gas mixes with atmospheric moisture to form hydrochloric acid, which corrodes circuit boards, connector pins, and data cabling throughout the building — often causing more economic damage than the fire itself. H05Z-K/H07Z-K's zero-halogen polyolefin insulation eliminates this secondary damage mechanism entirely. The insulation resistance of 10 MΩ × km is approximately a thousand times higher than PVC (0.01 MΩ × km at 70°C — polyolefin's inherently lower dielectric loss becomes the dominant advantage in long conduit runs where cumulative leakage current must be minimised. The smoke density per EN 50268 / IEC 61034 and combustion gas corrosiveness per EN 50267-2-2 / IEC 60754-2 are explicitly tested and certified — PVC cables carry no such certification because they categorically fail both tests.

The 8×D bending radius is a real-world installation consideration — LSOH cable is inherently stiffer than PVC wire of the same cross-section due to the higher modulus of cross-link polyolefin compared to the relatively soft PVC compound. Electricians accustomed to the effortless flexibility of PVC wire will notice the difference immediately when pulling LSOH through conduit bends. The -40°C static operating temperature, however, dramatically exceeds PVC wire's 0°C lower limit — making H05Z-K/H07Z-K suitable for outdoor and unheated installations in cold climates where PVC wire would become brittle and crack during winter installation. CE marked under the Low Voltage Directive and ROHS compliant, H05Z-K/H07Z-K is the European harmonised LSOH building wire — the standard against which all other halogen-free single-core cables are benchmarked in the CENELEC market. 21 sizes from 0.5mm² to 240mm², all 100m per roll.

H05Z-K H07Z-K Cross Section — Class 5 flexible copper strands with LSOH polyolefin EI5 insulation

Insulation — Black cross-link polyolefin EI5, thermosetting LSOH per BS EN 50363-5, zero halogen emission when burned

1

Class 5 Flexible Copper

Fine bare copper strands to VDE-0295 Class 5, IEC 60228 Class 5, BS 6360 cl.5, HD 383. Flexible enough for panel and appliance interior routing despite stiffer LSOH insulation.

2

XLPE Polyolefin EI5 (Thermosetting)

Cross-link polyolefin EI5 per BS EN 50363-5 — NOT thermoplastic PVC. 90°C continuous, -40°C static, zero halogen emission, 10 MΩ·km insulation resistance.

3

8×D Bending — LSOH Trade-off

Twice the bending radius of PVC (4×D). Polyolefin is inherently stiffer — plan conduit routes with larger bend radii for LSOH installations.

4

-40°C Cold Climate Rated

Static operating down to -40°C — PVC wire embrittles at 0°C. Suitable for outdoor and unheated installations in northern European and Canadian climates.

10 MΩ·km insulation resistance — what it means: H05Z-K/H07Z-K's 10 MΩ·km minimum insulation resistance is approximately 1,000× the typical PVC wire value. A 100m run of 1.5mm² PVC wire at 70°C leaks ~0.67 mA at 230V — negligible. But a 1km run (common in industrial lighting circuits) leaks ~6.7 mA which approaches the 30 mA RCD trip threshold. The LSOH equivalent leaks only ~0.023 mA at 1km — effectively zero. For data centres, hospitals, and process control facilities where hundreds of parallel circuits share a common earth path, the cumulative leakage reduction is the difference between nuisance RCD tripping and reliable operation.

Typical Applications

H05Z-K/H07Z-K is the standard LSOH wire for European public buildings, hospitals, and any installation where toxic PVC smoke cannot be tolerated:

🏥

Hospitals & Healthcare

Internal wiring of hospital electrical systems — zero HCl gas means no corrosive damage to sensitive medical electronics after a fire event.

🏛️

Public & Government Buildings

Mandatory for EU public building electrical installations — LSOH is specified in tender documents for schools, libraries, and administrative buildings.

💻

Data Centres & Server Rooms

Zero corrosive gas emission protects servers, storage arrays, and networking equipment from HCl acid damage — the economic case for LSOH in ICT facilities.

✈️

Airports & Transport Hubs

Enclosed public spaces with high occupant density — toxic PVC smoke in an airport terminal would cause mass casualties. LSOH is non-negotiable.

🏢

Commercial Buildings

Internal wiring of appliances and equipment in commercial premises where smoke and toxic fumes threaten life and electronic equipment.

❄️

Cold Climate Installations

-40°C static rating — suitable for outdoor and unheated northern European installations where PVC wire becomes brittle at 0°C.
