Product Overview

NAYBY Cable is a 0.6/1kV PVC-insulated steel tape armoured PVC-sheathed power cable with aluminium conductor, manufactured to the German VDE standard DIN VDE 0276-603. Naming follows VDE convention: N = standard type, A = aluminium conductor, Y = PVC insulation, B = steel tape armour (Bewehrung), Y = PVC outer sheath. It is the aluminium-conductor counterpart of the copper NYBY — identical Al/PVC/STA/PVC construction with ~30% weight reduction and lower material cost. The Chinese GB/T equivalent is VLV22. NAYBY is widely specified for underground power distribution, industrial feeder circuits, and building installations where aluminium conductor economics are prioritised under VDE-certified construction.

NAYBY Cable Cross Section with 3D Cutaway and 2D Cross-Section

Outer Sheath — Black PVC, flame retardant
Steel Tape Armour — Double galvanized, helically applied
PVC Bedding — Light blue extruded separation sheath
PVC Insulation — 70°C, VDE 0276 colour coded
Aluminium Conductor — Class 2 stranded per IEC 60228

1

Aluminium Conductor

Class 2 stranded per IEC 60228. Solid for ≤4mm², stranded for ≥6mm². 61% IACS conductivity at ~50% weight of equivalent copper.

2

PVC Insulation

70°C continuous, 160°C short-circuit (max 5s). VDE 0276-603 colour coded: Brown/Black/Grey/Blue + Green/Yellow for earth.

3

PVC Bedding

Light blue extruded separation sheath between cores and armour. Prevents PVC insulation abrasion from steel tape edges during bending.

4

Steel Tape Armour

Double galvanized steel tape, helically applied. 0.2mm for ≤35mm², 0.5mm for ≥50mm². Provides mechanical protection for direct burial.

5

PVC Outer Sheath

Black PVC compound 5V-90. Flame retardant per IEC 60332-1. UV and moisture resistant for outdoor and underground use.

6

Economic Armoured

Aluminium conductor + PVC insulation offers the lowest-cost armoured cable solution. ~30% lighter and ~50% cheaper conductor vs copper NYBY.

Applicable Standards & VDE Certification

StandardScope
DIN VDE 0276-603German national standard for PVC insulated power cables 0.6/1kV. Primary standard covering NAYBY construction, testing, and core identification.
IEC 60502-1International standard for LV power cables. NAYBY meets all IEC 60502-1 structural requirements. Equivalent Chinese designation: VLV22.
IEC 60332-1Single cable vertical flame test. Mandatory for building installation cables in EU and Germany.
IEC 60228Conductor standard. Class 2 stranded aluminium conductors throughout the NAYBY range.
DIN EN 50525-2-31Harmonised European standard for PVC insulated cables. Applies where NAYBY is used in EU member states outside Germany.

4 x + 1 xBrown + Black + Grey + Blue + Green/Yellow (reduced cross-section earth)
G vs x notation in VDE 0276-603: "G" means the earth conductor has the same cross-section as the phase conductors. This is the German regulatory default for public buildings and high-occupancy installations. "x" means standard cores without a dedicated earth conductor, or with reduced earth in "3x+1x" / "4x+1x" configurations where the protective conductor uses a smaller cross-section.

Typical Applications

1

Underground Distribution

Direct burial in soil for LV power distribution networks. Steel tape armour provides mechanical protection against ground pressure and excavation tools.

2

Industrial Feeders

Power supply to motors, machinery, and production lines in factories. PVC insulation resists oils, acids, and alkalis common in industrial environments.

3

Building Installation

Fixed installation in concrete, masonry, and cable ducts. VDE 0276-603 certification enables use in German and EU public building projects.

4

Cable Trays & Trenches

Open-air installation on cable trays or in covered trenches. UV-resistant black PVC sheath for outdoor routing between buildings.

5

Renewable Energy

LV collector circuits in solar farms and wind farms where project economics favour aluminium conductor for long cable runs.

6

Infrastructure

Power supply for water treatment plants, pumping stations, tunnel lighting, and transport infrastructure requiring VDE-certified armoured cable.

PVC vs XLPE Temperature Note: NAYBY uses PVC insulation rated at 70°C (not 90°C XLPE). For applications requiring higher continuous operating temperature, consider NA2XBY (Al/XLPE/STA/PVC, 90°C) or for unarmoured use, NAYY (Al/PVC/PVC). Always verify the temperature rating matches the installation environment and load profile.
