Product Overview

XS Copper Overhead Aerial Bundle Cable is a 0.6/1kV bare twisted overhead cable with copper conductors and XLPE insulation, manufactured to Portuguese standard NP 3528, harmonised European standard HD 626 DMA C33-209, and IEC 60754-1 / EN 60754-1 for halogen-free performance. Unlike sheathed ABC cables (e.g. TYIR), XS has no outer jacket — the XLPE insulation serves as both electrical dielectric and weather barrier. Conductors are stranded class 2 copper with left-hand (S) outer layer lay; the cores are assembled helically with right-hand (Z) lay direction. This construction provides a self-cleaning twisted bundle that sheds ice and wind load while maintaining conductor spacing to prevent phase-to-phase contact. Designed for 25-year service life at -60°C to +50°C ambient, XS is the premium copper overhead distribution cable for harsh climates and public distribution networks.

1

Copper Class 2 Stranded

Left-hand (S) outer layer stranding direction. Copper's superior conductivity means smaller diameter vs aluminium at same ampacity.

2

XLPE Insulation

Cross-linked polyethylene. 90°C continuous, 130°C overload (8h/day), 250°C short-circuit. No separate outer jacket — insulation is the weather barrier.

3

Right-Hand (Z) Helical Lay

Cores laid-up helically in right-hand direction. Self-cleaning bundle — ice, snow, and water drain naturally from twisted geometry.

4

No Outer Sheath

Open bundle design — XLPE insulation directly exposed to weather. Lighter, simpler to install and splice than jacketed ABC. Halogen-free per IEC 60754-1.

5

Extreme Climate Rated

Operating range: -60°C to +50°C. Minimum laying temperature: -20°C. 25-year design service life. Bending radius: 10×D.

6

Copper ABC Premium

XS = copper (Portuguese designation). Aluminium equivalent is LXS. Copper offers ~60% lower DC resistance for the same cross-section.

Applicable Standards

StandardScope
NP 3528Portuguese national standard for copper conductor XLPE insulated overhead aerial bundle cables for public distribution up to 0.6/1kV.
HD 626 DMA C33-209Harmonised European document for aerial bundled cables. Section C33-209 specifically covers copper conductor XLPE insulated ABC without messenger.
IEC 60754-1 / EN 60754-1Halogen acid gas emission test. XS cable insulation is halogen-free, verified by this standard — critical for public distribution safety.
XS vs LXS — copper vs aluminium: XS uses copper conductor; LXS is the aluminium equivalent (L = aluminium in Portuguese convention, same as LXAV / LXRV). Copper XS offers ~60% lower DC resistance per cross-section compared to LXS, enabling either higher ampacity or smaller cable diameter. For budget-sensitive long runs, consider LXS. For premium public distribution networks in extreme climates, XS provides maximum reliability with its -60°C rating.

Typical Applications

XS cables are designed for overhead public distribution networks where the bare twisted XLPE bundle replaces traditional bare conductors on insulators. The halogen-free insulation and 25-year service life make XS the preferred choice for populated urban and suburban overhead lines:

🏙️

Urban Distribution

Public overhead distribution in cities and suburbs. Bare twisted bundle on poles — no additional sheathing needed for weather protection.

🏔️

Extreme Climates

-60°C to +50°C operating range. Arctic to desert — the widest temperature envelope of any standard ABC cable family.

🚦

Street Lighting Networks

Combined phase + lighting cores in a single twisted bundle. 2.5mm² auxiliary conductors for public lighting circuits.

🏗️

Rural Electrification

Single-pole distribution to remote communities. Lightweight bare bundle simplifies installation — no messenger or jacket to strip.
