Product Overview

NMY / NYM-J / NYM-O Cable is a 300/500V PVC-insulated PVC-sheathed copper installation cable manufactured to the German standard DIN VDE 0250-204. It is the standard European household and industrial building wire — commonly referred to simply as "NYM cable" in the trade. Construction: bare copper conductor (solid Class 1 RE or stranded Class 2 RM per IEC 60228 / HD 383), PVC insulation compound TI1, filler wrapping of non-vulcanised rubber or plastic compound, and a grey (RAL 7035) PVC outer sheath compound TM1. The three designation variants clarify the earthing arrangement: NYM is the generic type, NYM-J includes a green/yellow earth conductor, and NYM-O is without earth conductor. The semi-waterproof filler wrapping between cores and sheath gives NMY its distinctive round profile and allows installation in damp and wet environments — a key advantage over standard PVC/PVC cables that lack this moisture barrier.

NMY cable is designed for fixed installation on or under plaster, in walls, in concrete (but not dry or pre-stressed concrete), and in masonry. It can be used in dry, damp, and wet indoor environments, and outdoors only when protected from direct sunlight — the PVC sheath is not UV-stabilised. The flame-retardant PVC construction meets IEC 60332-1 / EN 50265-2-1 single-cable vertical flame test, making it suitable for building installations where fire propagation risk must be controlled. Unlike armoured cables which provide mechanical protection, NMY relies on its installation environment (plaster, conduit, walls) for physical protection — it must not be directly buried or exposed to mechanical stress. The 70°C continuous operating temperature with 160°C short-circuit rating makes NMY suitable for all standard household and light industrial fixed wiring at 300/500V.

NMY sits at the centre of the European installation cable family: less expensive than armoured cables (NA2XBY, NYBY) but more robust than plain PVC/PVC twin-and-earth. The 4×D bending radius for multi-core (3+ cores) — dramatically tighter than the 12×D typical of armoured cables — makes NMY the preferred choice for residential wiring where cables must navigate wall cavities, floor voids, and tight junction boxes. The grey RAL 7035 sheath provides a clean, professional appearance for visible installation in basements, garages, and utility rooms, and is standardised across VDE-compliant European building practice.
